POYMS: Personal Leadership Development Training (Philex ALS)

Personal Leadership Development Training is one of the most challenging program that our organization Philex and Outlying Youth Movers Society (POYMS) is conducting and implementing. June 25, 2014. Philex and Outlying Youth Movers Society (POYMS) was invited to conduct a Personal Leadership Training to the students of Philex Alternative Learning System. We prepared activities in line with the Objectives: 1. Participating in all the activities prepared by the facilitators. 2. Balance their emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects throughout the day. 3. Enhance their interpersonal skills by sharing and communicating with the group. 4. Identify, Appreciate and embrace their strength and weaknesses. 5. Open their minds and hearts on how important education is. At exactly 9:00 am the program started, with a prayer, led by a participant followed by Pambansang Awit, Opening Remarks and Introduction of the Facilitators and POYMS. Some of them heard about POYMS and some of them are able to recognize us because majority of them attended the Youth Development Camp which was held at Camp1, Ligay, Tuba, Benguet and which was conducted by POYMS. After introducing the group, we presented a video documentation of the Youth Development Camp and let them enumerate the learnings and changes they have seen from themselves.
The first activity was called “Crossing the Line”, this activity serves as an eye opener to all. They were able to see the strength and weakness of their classmates and peers and even helped us understand and appreciate the participants. The activity went emotional but, they were able to bring out their difficulties in life and true feelings. The crossing the line activity for Philex ALS was one of the most memorable and inspiring because we have gifted students as our participant, we have felt the sincerity when they Crossed the Line in the Question “Who among you have disability and experienced a subject for laughter?”. Everyone was silent at this moment and deep breath was all around the hall.
The second activity was called “Sunshine Card Game”. This game balances the mood of everyone from emotional to more open activity. The activity was about writing an observation either positive or negative and even a message. A piece of paper was stick on their back and everyone must write a message about the person about the person. We have observed that the students have been very open in giving messages to each other, comments like “God Bless You, Walang susuko.
After the sunshine card game we had film viewing of inspiring videos touching their emotions and spiritual aspect and we let them summarize and process the videos. After which, the “Tower Building” was created by the group. Each group was given a pack of drinking straw and one roll of masking tape, the objective was to create the tallest and stiffest tower in 30minutes time, it lasted until lunch time.
In the afternoon, we started with the group dynamics or the activity proper, the following activities are; “Newspaper Dance”, “Cup Passing”, “Rope Passing”, “Blind Maze” and “Blind Spell”. Every after activity we are processing everything and relating activities to real life experiences.
For our final and closing program, the group explained the tower buildings that they had created. These tower buildings were processed and relate to the activities throughout the day. It also serves as the evaluation of the POYMS facilitator to the ALS learners and ALS learners to the POYMS facilitators.
The PLD ended with a surprise awarding which reward the outstanding and most cooperative ALS learners and finally a prayer.
